HAZARD: Heavy Equipment Accidents

Employees working with heavy equipment every day, such as forklifts tend to get comfortable using the equipment. This can be very dangerous if the operator begins to underestimate the danger of the machine.

PREVENTION: Heavy Equipment Accidents

  • Ensure that all employees understand the potential hazards a forklift or other warehouse machines present.
  • Remain cautious and careful when operating any machine.
  • Always follow the specific instructions provided for the equipment.
  • Forklift drivers need to be trained, competent and certified to drive a forklift.

HAZARD: Slips and Trips

Slipping is a very common warehouse hazard that can be easily avoided.

PREVENTION: Slips and Trips

To prevent the majority of slips and trips in your warehouse:

  • Don’t store items on the floor that might be tripped on.
  • Eliminate dark, obstructed and uneven floor surfaces.
  • Don’t carry items too tall for you to see over.
  • Place caution signs when mopping or when floors are wet.
  • Clean up spills immediately.

HAZARD: Falls

Falling accounts for a large majority of workplace accidents.

When working around loading docks, remember your training and stay aware of your surroundings. Also, whenever there is a large drop between floors, proper guard railing is essential.

Falling objects can cause serious injurious and can be fatal when heavy loads fall from high shelving.

A common material handling practice is stacking objects on high platforms and shelves. Always keep heavy loads stacked neatly to avoid a shifting load or cylindrical objects from rolling off of shelves.

HAZARD: Ergonomics

Constant, uncomfortable body posture will lead to pain and injury.

There are several ergonomic solutions to common warehouse problems such as back and foot pain. Employees must also practice proper lifting techniques.

HAZARD: Fires

A fire can jeopardize your entire warehouse, but this hazard is also among the most preventable accidents.

PREVENTION:

An emergency preparedness and response plan together with sufficient emergency equipment need to be established, implemented and maintained to control the risk. Things to avoid are:

  • Worn and exposed wires such as old extension cord, leaking flammable fluids and gasses etc.
